Downtown Dubai & Burj Al-Arab Fireworks - New... by Videospot

Running Wild with Bear Grylls President Barack... by Videospot President Obama is heading into the wilderness in his upcoming appearance on “Running Wild With Bear Grylls,” and in a new clip for the episode, it seems he can stomach anything (except for peas in guacamole). The sneak peek shows the president declaring his nervousness about eating with the survival expert as they venture into Alaskan wilderness. “I’ve seen some of the stuff Bear eats, and it’s gotta be something that doesn’t still have its legs and eyes on it. I want it not to be too recognizable,” Obama said. And what Grylls pulls out of his backpack is luckily familiar. It just happens to be fresh Alaskan salmon that was partially eaten by a bear. Being the foodie that he is, the president rated the meal as “tasty.” The chef, on the other hand, was unimpressive. “Bear’s a mediocre cook, but the fact that we ate something recognizable was encouraging,” he said. “Now, the fact that he told me this was a leftover fish from a bear, I don’t know if that was necessary. He could have just left that out.”

Quaid E Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah- Unseen Video by Videospot Muhammad Ali Jinnah (25 December 1876 – 11 September 1948 in Karachi, Present day Pakistan) is the founder of Pakistan. After the partition of India, he became the Governor General of Pakistan. As a mark of respect, Pakistanis call him as Quaid-e-Azam.Quaid-e-Azam is a phrase which, in the Urdu language, means "the great leader". People also called him Baba-I-Quam, another phrase in the Urdu language which means "the father of the nation". The day of his birth is a national holiday in Pakistan.
Quaid-E-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah
Founder Of Pakistan
Early Life
Jinnah’s birth name was Mahomedali Jinnahbhai. He later changed it to the much simpler 'Muhammad Ali Jinnah' or M.A. Jinnah. He was born in Karachi (Sindh, now in Pakistan). The earliest record of his school register gives his date of birth as 20 October 1875, the author of Jinnah’s first biography gives another date of his birth, namely, the 25 December 1876.

Jinnah Poonja
Father Of Quaid-E-Azam
His father’s name was Jinnah Poonja (born 1857-died 1901) and his mother’s name was Mithibai. Jinnah was the eldest of the seven children of Jinnah Poonja and Mithibai. His family had migrated to Sindh from the Kathiawar area of Gujarat, India.
Jinnah read in many schools. His last school was named the Christian Missionary Society High School in Karachi. At home, his family talked in Gujarati language. But, the family members also knew Kutchi language, Sindhi language, and English language, but widely understood although did not speak in Urdu.

Emibai Jinnah
Quaid-E-Azam Wife

Early working years

In 1891(when he was fifteen), Jinnah went to London and worked for few years for a company. Before going to London, he was married to Emibai. She was his distant relative. At the time of her marriage, Emibai was around 14 or 16 years old. But, Emibai died shortly after Jinnah had gone to London. At around the same time, his mother also died.

In 1894, Jinnah quit his job to study law. He joined the course at Lincoln's Inn and graduated in 1896. While still in London, he also started to participate in politics. He greatly admired Indian political leaders Dadabhai Naoroji and Sir Pherozeshah Mehta. Gradually Jinnah was developing his own political outlook. He was thinking on the line that India should have a constitutional self-government.

Around this time, his father lost his business. This put Jinnah under great difficulty. In the meantime, he had started to practice as a lawyer in Mumbai. He also built a house in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill area. The house is now known as Jinnah House.

He became a successful lawyer. Bal Gangadhar Tilak, a famous leader of India, once used Jinnah to work as a lawyer. Tilak was facing charges of sedition against the British Raj. Jinnah pleaded the case beautifully. But, Tilak was sent to prison.

Early years as a politician
Jinnah had already joined the Indian National Congress in 1906 The Congress was the largest political organization in India. Many members and leaders of the Indian National Congress favored a limited self-government for India. Jinnah also held the same view. At that time, his role model was Gopal Krishna Gokhale.

On 25 January 1910, Jinnah became a member on the sixty-member Imperial Legislative Council. He was an active member of the Council. Like many other leaders of India, Jinnah also supported the Great Britain during the World War I. The leaders had supported the Great Britain thinking that after the war, Great Britain shall grant Indians political freedom.

At the beginning Jinnah had avoided to join the All India Muslim League, another political organization of India. Muslims had formed the League in 1906. In 1913, Jinnah became a member of the Muslim League. In 1916, he became the president of the Muslim League. He helped in making an agreement between the Congress and the Muslim League. The agreement tried to present a united front to the British for giving India self-government dominion status in the British Empire. This was similar to the dominion status which Canada, New Zealand and Australia had at that time.

Rattanbai Petit
Quaid-E-Azam Second Wife

In 1918, Jinnah married again. His second wife was Rattanbai Petit. She was twenty-four years younger to him. She was the daughter of Jinnah’s personal friend sir Dinshaw Petit. Petit belonged to Parsi Zoroastrian community. Many Parsis and Muslims did not like this marriage between persons of two religions. The Jinnah couple resided in Bombay (now Mumbai) and frequently traveled to Europe. In 1919, his wife bore a daughter. The daughter was named Dina

Quaid-E-Azam with his sister & daughter Dina
Fourteen points & in London
By 1918, Mohandas Gandhi had become one of the main leaders of the Congress Party. Gandhi took a line of non-violent protest for gaining self-government for India. Jinnah took a different line. He wanted constitutional struggle to gain the self-government for India. Jinnah also opposed Gandhi’s support for the Khilafat movement. Gradually, many differences between them had arisen. In 1920, Jinnah left the Congress party. He became the president of the Muslim League. At this time, Jinnah brought out a program to reduce the differences between the Congress Party and the Muslim League. The program had fourteen points of action. Therefore, it became popular as Jinnah’s fourteen points. But the Congress party did not accept these.

All these years Jinnah’s personal life had suffered. This was the result of his political work. Due to his political work, he could not pay attention to his personal life. Due to this reason, his marriage also suffered. Finally, the couple separated in 1927. After a serious illness, Rattanbai died.

Around that time, there was a conference of Indian leaders with the government of Great Britain. It is known as the Round Table Conference. It was held in London. Jinnah criticized the policy of Gandhi. The conference failed. Jinnah was also not happy with the Muslim League. He decided to quit politics. He again started to work as a lawyer in England. During all these years, his sister Fatima Jinnah took care of Jinnah’s affairs, both at home and outside. She also became a close advisor to him. She helped him in raising Jinnah’s daughter, Dina Wadia. The daughter married Neville Wadia, a Parasi who had converted to Christianity. Jinnah did not like this marriage, but continued to correspond with his daughter.

As a leader of the Muslim League

Many Muslim leaders of India like Aga Khan III, Coudhary Rahmat Ali and Sir Muhammad Iqbal requested Jinnah to come back to India.

The leaders of the Muslim league wanted to take charge of the Muslim League. Jinnah agreed to come back to India. In 1934, he left London and returned to India to reorganize Muslim league again. But he could not revive the stature of the party till after the elections of 1937 as Muslim League could not win many seats in it. However, at this time, the League was helped by the powerful Premier of the Punjab, Sir Sikandar Hayat Khan. On October 1937, he agreed with Jinnah's to join his strong government with the League. This was called the Jinnah-Sikandar Pact.

His differences with the Congress Party continued to become bigger. In 1930, some Muslim leaders like Allama Iqbal had argued for a separate country for Muslim of India. At last he came to the conclusion that Hindus and Muslims cannot live in a single country. Jinnah also started to have the idea of a separate country for Muslims of India. Jinnah and the Muslim League started work to get such a separate country. They made a plan for this in 1940 called the Pakistan Resolution. This new country was to be named Pakistan.

In 1941, Jinnah founded a newspaper, named the Dawn. This newspaper published the views and political thinking of the Muslim League. During World War II, Jinnah supported the British, and opposed the Quit India movement of the Congress party. In 1944, Gandhi held 14 rounds of talks with Jinnah, but they could not come to any conclusion. By this time, the Muslim League had formed governments in some provinces, and had also entered the central government.

As the founder of Pakistan
After the Second World War, the Great Britain started steps to give independence to India. On 16 May 1946, the British announced plan for a united India. One month after, on 16 June 1946, the British announced another plan to partition the British Raj into two countries, one for the Hindus and one for the Muslims.

The Congress Party accepted the plan of the 16 May 1946. The Muslim League under Jinnah’s leadership accepted both the plans. But, on 16 August 1946, Jinnah also announced the Direct Action to achieve independence for Pakistan, a separate country of Muslims of the former British Raj. After several rounds of discussion, the British Raj was partitioned (in August 1947) into two countries, India and Pakistan. In 1971, Bangladesh gained independence from Pakistan.

As the Governor-General
lag of Governor General of Pakistan
The British Raj of India was partitioned into two countries, namely, India and Pakistan. Jinnah became the first Governor-General of Pakistan, his sister Fatimah Jinnah became the "Mother of the Nation". He also became the president of Pakistan’s constituent assembly. In an address to the constituent assembly on 11 August 1947, Jinnah told about the future of Pakistan as a secular state. He told this in the following words:

You may belong to any religion caste or creed - that has nothing to do with the business of the state. In due course of time, Hindus will cease to be Hindus and Muslims will cease to be Muslims, not in the religious sense, because that is the personal faith of each individual, but in the political sense as citizens of the state.

Jinnah also took the direct charge of the government. After the partition, large scale violence between Muslims and the Hindus took place. Such violence was very serious in Punjab and Bengal. Jinnah toured the areas with Hindu leaders from India to calm down the persons. Several persons died in the violence. The estimates of death vary from two hundred thousand deaths to over a million deaths. Jinnah was personally very sad at all these happenings.

Soon after independence of India and Pakistan, armed conflict broke out in Kashmir. Kashmir’s king had agreed to become a part of India. but mostly Muslims of Kashmir did not like this. They started fighting in Kashmir. India had to send his troops to Kashmir, which had become a part of India. India raised the issue to the United Nations. The United Nations ordered the conflict to end and a Plebiscite. This problem still continues to have a bad effect on the India-Pakistan relationship.

Jinnah’s role in creation of Pakistan as a new nation was very important. This made him very popular among the people of Pakistan. In East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), people opposed Jinnah’s view that Urdu language should be the sole national language.

Death
Jinnah had been suffering from tuberculosis since the early 1940s. Only his sister, and very few other persons close to the family knew this. After partition of India and creation of Pakistan, he had become the governor general of Pakistan. His work has increased, but his health was deteriorating. To regain his health, he spent many months at his official rest house. The rest house was located at a place named in Ziarat. Jinnah could not regain his health. He died on 11 September 1948 from tuberculosis and lung cancer.

At the place of his funeral, the government of Pakistan has constructed a big mausoleum. His house named Jinnah House is under the possession of the government of India. The government of India wants to give the house to the government of Pakistan. But, the position is not clear till now.

Modern views on Jinnah
In recent years, some scholars have given some new views about Jinnah’s actions. Jinnah showed interest that some of the Hindu majority princely states should join Pakistan. These scholars argue that this view was against Jinnah’s declared view that Hindus and Muslims could not live together.

Some historians like H M Seervai and Ayesha Jalal say that Jinnah wanted a united South Asia. He demanded a separate state for Muslims as the Congress leaders were not willing to share power with the Muslim League.

Recently, Indian leaders belonging to the Bhartiya Janta Party, like Lal Krishna Advani and Jaswant Singh praised Jinnah. Jaswant Singh was expelled from the party because he had praised Jinnah in his book 'Jinnah- India, Partition and Independence'.

Commemoration
Muhammad Ali Jinnah On Iran Stamp

In memory of Jinnah, nations and people have done many things. In Pakistan he is called Quaid-e-Azam. His pictures appear on many Pakistani banknotes and coins. Karachi’s international airport is named after him. In 1998 a new university in Karachi was named the Mohammad Ali Jinnah University.

There are many other places and institutions bearing his name. In many other countries also, some places are named after Jinnah. For example, in Turkey, a very large street is named after him. In Iran, one of the highways of its capital city Tehran bears his name, in Mumbai Jinnah Hall, a public hall is named after him.

Many books, movies and TV programs also tell about the life and work of Jinnah, including Jinnah (movie).
Merry Christmas That time of year again when friends and family think about the Christmases of the past and plan for the coming holiday with their loved ones in mind. As we reflect on this wonderful holiday, we must keep in mind that Christmas is not just any holiday but may be the most important one of the year for some people. It is a time for remembering, a time to share the goodness of your heart with others, and for expressing with words and gifts what someone means to you. It is a chance to make wishes come true and to give something from your heart. It is a chance to give a message that will express love and caring to the ones we care about the most. As you write your messages, take the time to make a Christmas wish for each and every person on your list. With these thoughts in mind I would like to give you what I think are the best wishes for this holiday.

Quaid E Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah- Unseen Video by Videospot Muhammad Ali Jinnah, (Urdu: محمد علی جناح‎ ALA-LC: Muḥammad ʿAlī Jināḥ, born Mahomedali Jinnahbhai; 25 December 1876 – 11 September 1948) was a lawyer, politician, and the founder of Pakistan.[1] Jinnah served as leader of the All-India Muslim League from 1913 until Pakistan's independence on 14 August 1947, and then as Pakistan's first Governor-General from independence until his death. He is revered in Pakistan as Quaid-i-Azam (Urdu: قائد اعظم‎ Great Leader) and Baba-i-Qaum (Urdu: بابائے قوم‎ Father of the Nation). His birthday is observed as a national holiday.
Born in Karachi and trained as a barrister at Lincoln's Inn in London, Jinnah rose to prominence in the Indian National Congress in the first two decades of the 20th century. In these early years of his political career, Jinnah advocated Hindu–Muslim unity, helping to shape the 1916 Lucknow Pact between the Congress and the All-India Muslim League, in which Jinnah had also become prominent. Jinnah became a key leader in the All India Home Rule League, and proposed a fourteen-point constitutional reform plan to safeguard the political rights of Muslims. In 1920, however, Jinnah resigned from the Congress when it agreed to follow a campaign of satyagraha, or non-violent resistance, advocated by Mohandas Gandhi. By 1940, Jinnah had come to believe that Indian Muslims should have their own state. In that year, the Muslim League, led by Jinnah, passed the Lahore Resolution, demanding a separate nation. During the Second World War, the League gained strength while leaders of the Congress were imprisoned, and in the elections held shortly after the war, it won most of the seats reserved for Muslims. Ultimately, the Congress and the Muslim League could not reach a power-sharing formula for a united India, leading all parties to agree to separate independence of a predominately Hindu India, and for a Muslim-majority state, to be called Pakistan. As the first Governor-General of Pakistan, Jinnah worked to establish the new nation's government and policies, and to aid the millions of Muslim migrants who had emigrated from the new nation of India to Pakistan after independence, personally supervising the establishment of refugee camps. Jinnah died at age 71 in September 1948, just over a year after Pakistan gained independence from the British Raj. He left a deep and respected legacy in Pakistan. According to his biographer, Stanley Wolpert, he remains Pakistan's greatest leader.

Amputee girl dreams of flying high

Despite losing her legs in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Huang Meihua harbored a dream of becoming a pilot. And it might soon turn into reality.
Huang recently received an offer for a three-week flying course from a Canadian aviation academy in Vancouver starting February, the Chengdu Business Daily reported.
In Vancouver, she will learn aviation fundamentals and also be enrolled in a flight training class for up to 10 hours. After the three-week course, she will go through a comprehensive assessment that will determine her physical condition and academic performance, which will determine if she would be qualified to fly.
“Since the school has chosen me, I’m confident that I can make it,” Huang said. “Many people have [difficult] dreams – but there are many things worth trying in life.”
Huang was only 11 years when the magnitude-8.0 earthquake hit Beichuan county seven years ago on May 12. She was buried under a collapsed school building before she could run to safety. Hours later, she was among the fortunate survivors to be rescued; however, both her legs had to be amputated.

But that didn’t deter Huang from pursuing her studies. She was accepted at an international school in Dujiangyan city along with a scholarship. Though she struggled to learn English, the school’s medium of study, she excelled at her studies and worked toward her dream of becoming a pilot.

But why a pilot?
Hours after the quake, Huang remembers being rescued and then rushed to the hospital on a helicopter. And for that very reason, she wants to pursue this profession – Huang wants to be a part of the air rescue team after she receives her pilot license.
“I want my experience to have good influence on people,” she said.

PESHAWAR: The nation is observing the first anniversary of the terrorist attack on the Army Public School (APS) Peshawar today.

The entire political and military leadership including Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif are attending the main function at the APS to pay homage to the martyrs and the injured children, staff members and their families.
As many as 147 people, including 122 schoolchildren, were mercilessly killed on December 16, 2014 in the most horrible act of terror. The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) claimed responsibility for the brazen attack. Those martyred, particularly the schoolchildren, have been hailed as national heroes and credited with forging unity in the country for fighting the war against terrorism.
According to the regional in-charge of the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the main function to mark the first anniversary of the APS tragedy would be held at the campus of the school where medals and certificates would be awarded to the parents of the martyrs and the survivors. He said that only the state media like the Pakistan Television would be allowed to cover the main function.
Another function would be held at the Archives Library, where the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan would lay the foundation-stone of the monument for the APS martyrs. On the occasion, the Archives Library would be renamed as Shuhada-e-Army Public School Library.
Quran Khwani and condolence references for the APS martyrs are being arranged at almost all the educational institutions and other offices in the provincial capital. At the Awami National Party (ANP) headquarters, Bacha Khan Markaz, special prayers have been arranged for the APS martyrs.
Adviser to Chief Minister Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani told a press conference that the provincial government had announced public holiday in Peshawar district today. He said Imran Khan, Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak and other ministers would also attend the main function. Mushtaq Ghani claimed that the provincial government had never abandoned the families of the martyrs and wounded students of the APS. He said that 122 government schools in the province were named after the martyrs and 142 members of the martyrs’ families were sent to Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.
The adviser said foreign tours to four countries were also arranged for the surviving students of the APS so that they could forget the gory incident. He added that the provincial government also offered jobs to 21 family members of the martyrs. He said eight were provided jobs while the rest didn’t consider the offer. He said the KP government was also taking steps for provision of free education to other children of the martyrs’ families.
Sources told The News that apart from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Army Chief General Raheel Sharif, the chief ministers of Punjab, Sindh, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and ambassadors of several countries are also expected to attend the ceremony at the APS. Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah reached Peshawar Tuesday to attend the function.
Strict security arrangements have been made to ensure peaceful observance of the anniversary. Some 2,000 policemen have been deployed in the city for ensuring security. The army personnel have already taken control of the APS and all the roads leading to it.Meanwhile, a condolence reference was held at the District Council Peshawar on Tuesday.
District Nazim Muhammad Asim Khan and other councillors paid glowing tributes to the martyrs of APS. The House also adopted a unanimous resolution in support of the ongoing military operation Zarb-e-Azb and the National Action Plan.

Flying high!
For sci-fi aficionados who have dreams of flying like their comic book hero Ironman, their dreams might have just been answered. The world’s first practical jetpack—the “Martin Jetpack”, made its first public flight in the south Chinese city of Shenzhen on Saturday. The flight was made by a representative from the New Zealand-based Martin Aircraft Company and witnessed by hundreds of people. While it only lasted five minutes, it was still four minutes longer than the Wright brother’s first airplane flight 112 years ago. The jetpack can be flown by a pilot or via remote control. With a 200-horsepower gasoline-powered engine, the manufacturers say it is able to fly nonstop at an altitude of 1,000 meters at a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour for around 30 minutes. It is thought that it could be widely used in areas including medical emergency, fire rescue, tourism and even general travel. In terms of safety, the company said the jetpack could find its own balance after taking off and a ballistic parachute system can be deployed in case of emergencies. Also on Saturday, the company’s Hong Kong-based joint venture KuangChi Martin Jetpack signed agreements with three Chinese companies for the purchase of 100 jetpacks. Chinese e-commerce site jd.com has listed the jetpack for sale online since late July, with the price set at 1.6 million yuan (approx. 251,800 US dollars). The time of delivery is estimated at around a year. The company has also launched a training center called the Iron Man Club. Anyone who wants to pilot the jetpack should join to receive professional training first in order to get a flying qualification. But before the products can be sold on a large scale, the company also needs to take the flight regulations in different countries into consideration. To expand its market in China, the company is now applying for flying permission and airspace for training. Disappointingly for some, the manufacturers, however, made no claims of being able to fly “faster than a speeding bullet”, “save the world from alien invasions” or any other comic book scenarios.

When most men get married, they choose a sibling, a childhood buddy, an old roommate or similarly close friend to stand up in the wedding as their best man. Casey Anderson chose a bear named Brutus. Brutus has been Casey's best friend ever since Casey rescued him from being euthanized at an overcrowded wildlife park when Brutus was just 5 months old. That's also when Casey founded the Montana Grizzly Encounter, an educational sanctuary where Brutus grew up. There, Brutus and Casey developed a deep emotional bond that Casey later described to "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in 2009. "This connection goes beyond just taking care of Brutus," Casey told Oprah back then. "They're very, very emotional animals... When he was a little baby, I was bottle-feeding him and I looked down in his eyes. He had a little tear in his eye. I just kind of chalked it up to [him] straining as he was sucking down the bottle. Several years later, Brutus got a bit of a bellyache. In his eyes, he had the same tear. At that moment, I realized that grizzly bears can feel the same emotions we do." Not only does Casey believe that Brutus experiences emotion, but he also told Oprah that his best friend can also sense -- and react -- when Casey is upset as well. "I was having a hard time, was really upset about some things... I was crying," Casey said. "I could see that he wanted to take the pain away from me. He came up to me very gently and nudged me. He just stood by me unconditionally and he listened to me and he was there when I was crying. It's truly what I needed from him. This relationship is a give-and-take."

Of the many different Psittacidae (true parrots) genera, six are classified as macaws: Ara, Anodorhynchus, Cyanopsitta, Primolius, Orthopsittaca, and Diopsittaca. Previously, the members of the genus Primolius were placed in Propyrrhura, but the former is correct in accordance with ICZN rules.Macaws are native to Central America and North America (only México), South America, and formerly the Caribbean. Most species are associated with forests, especially rainforests, but others prefer woodland or savannah-like habitats. Proportionately larger beaks, long tails, and relatively bare, light-coloured, medial (facial patch) areas distinguish macaws from other parrots. Sometimes the facial patch is smaller in some species, and limited to a yellow patch around the eyes and a second patch near the base of the beak in the members of the genus Anodorhynchus. A macaw's facial feather pattern is as unique as a fingerprint. The largest macaws are the hyacinth, Buffon's (great green) and green-winged macaws. While still relatively large, macaws of the genera Cyanopsitta, Orthopsittaca and Primolius are significantly smaller than the members of Anodorhynchus and Ara. The smallest member of the family, the red-shouldered macaw, is no larger than some parakeets of the genus Aratinga. Macaws, like other parrots, toucans and woodpeckers, are zygodactyl, having their first and fourth toes pointing backward. Species in taxonomic order Further information: List of macaws There are 19 species of macaws, including extinct and critically endangered species. In addition, there are several hypothetical extinct species that have been proposed based on very little evidence. Anodorhynchus Glaucous macaw, Anodorhynchus glaucus (critically endangered or extinct) Hyacinth macaw, Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus Indigo macaw or Lear's macaw, Anodorhynchus leari Cyanopsitta Little blue macaw or Spix's macaw, Cyanopsitta spixii (probably extinct in the wild) From L to R: scarlet macaw, blue-and-yellow macaw, and military macaw Blue-and-yellow macaw (left) and blue-throated macaw (right) Ara Blue-and-yellow macaw or blue-and-gold macaw, Ara ararauna Blue-throated macaw, Ara glaucogularis Military macaw, Ara militaris Great green macaw or Buffon's macaw, Ara ambiguus Scarlet macaw or Aracanga, Ara macao Green-winged macaw and red-and-green macaw, Ara chloropterus Red-fronted macaw, Ara rubrogenys Chestnut-fronted macaw or severe macaw, Ara severa †Cuban red macaw, Ara tricolor (extinct) †Saint Croix macaw, Ara autochthones (extinct) Orthopsittaca Red-bellied macaw, Orthopsittaca manilata Primolius Blue-headed macaw, Primolius couloni Blue-winged macaw or Illiger's macaw, Primolius maracana Golden-collared macaw, Primolius auricollis Diopsittaca Red-shouldered macaw or Hahn's macaw, Diopsittaca nobilis Hypothetical extinct species Several hypothetical extinct species of macaws have been postulated based on little evidence, and they may have been subspecies, or familiar parrots that were imported onto an island and later wrongly presumed to have a separate identity. Martinique macaw, Ara martinica, Rothschild 1905 Red-tailed blue-and-yellow macaw, Ara erythrura, Rothschild 1907 Lesser Antillean macaw, Ara guadeloupensis, Clark, 1905 Jamaican green-and-yellow macaw, Ara erythrocephala, Rothschild 1905 Jamaican red macaw, Ara gossei, Rothschild 1905 Dominican green-and-yellow macaw, Ara atwoodi, Clark, 1905 Violet macaw, Anodorhynchus purpurascens Extinctions and conservation status Glaucous macaw (behind hyacinth macaw) and other macaws The majority of macaws are now endangered in the wild and a few are extinct. The Spix's macaw is now probably extinct in the wild. The glaucous macaw is also probably extinct, with only two reliable records of sightings in the 20th century. The greatest problems threatening the macaw population are the rapid rate of deforestation and illegal trapping for the bird trade. International trade of all macaw species is regulated by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES). Some species of macaws—the scarlet macaw (Ara macao) as an example—are listed in the CITES Appendix I and may not be lawfully traded for commercial purposes. Other species, such as the red-shouldered macaw (Diopsittaca nobilis), are listed in Appendix II and may legally be traded commercially provided that certain controls are in place, including a non-detriment finding, establishment of an export quota, and issuing of export permits. Hybrids See also: Bird hybrid Sometimes macaws are hybridized for the pet trade. Aviculturists have reported an over-abundance of female blue-and-yellow macaws in captivity, which differs from the general rule with captive macaws and other parrots, where the males are more abundant.[citation needed] This would explain why the blue and gold is the most commonly hybridised macaw, and why the hybridising trend took hold among macaws. Common macaw hybrids include the harlequin (Ara ararauna × Ara chloroptera), miligold macaw (Ara ararauna × Ara militaris) and the Catalina (known as rainbows in Australia, Ara ararauna × Ara macao). In addition, unusual but apparently healthy intergeneric hybrids between the hyacinth macaw and several of the larger Ara macaws have also occasionally been seen in captivity. Diet and clay licks Macaws and mealy amazons at a clay lick in Tambopata National Reserve, Peru Macaws eat a variety of foods including seeds, nuts, fruits, palm fruits, leaves, flowers, and stems. Wild species may forage widely, over 100 km (62 mi) for some of the larger species such as Ara araurana (blue and yellow macaw) and Ara ambigua (great green macaw), in search of seasonally available foods. Some foods eaten by macaws in certain regions in the wild are said to contain toxic or caustic substances which they are able to digest. It has been suggested that parrots and macaws in the Amazon Basin eat clay from exposed river banks to neutralize these toxins. In the western Amazon hundreds of macaws and other parrots descend to exposed river banks to consume clay on an almost daily basis – except on rainy days. Donald Brightsmith, the principal investigator of the Tambopata Macaw Project, located at the Tambopata Research Center (TRC) in Peru, has studied the clay eating behaviour of parrots at clay licks in Peru. He and fellow investigators found that the soils macaws choose to consume at the clay licks do not have higher levels of cation-exchange capacity(ability to absorb toxins) than that of unused areas of the clay licks and thus the parrots could not be using the clay to neutralize ingested food toxins. Rather, the macaws and other bird and animal species prefer clays with higher levels of sodium. Sodium is a vital element that is scarce in environments greater than 100 kilometres from the ocean. The distribution of clay licks across South America further supports this hypothesis – as the largest and most species rich clay licks are found on the western side of the Amazon Basin far from oceanic influences. Salt-enriched (NaCl) oceanic aerosols are the main source of environmental sodium near coasts and this decreases drastically farther inland. Clay-eating behaviour by macaws is not seen outside the western Amazon region, even though macaws in these areas consume some toxic foods such as the seeds of Hura crepitans, or sandbox tree, which have toxic sap. Species of parrot that consume more seeds, which potentially have more toxins, do not use clay licks more than species that eat a greater proportion of flowers or fruit in their diets. Studies at TRC have shown a correlation between clay-lick use and the breeding season. Contents of nestling crop samples show a high percentage of clay fed to them by their parents. Calcium for egg development – another hypothesis – does not appear to be a reason for geophagy during this period as peak usage is after the hatching of eggs. Another theory is that the birds, as well as other herbivorous animals, use the clay licks as a source of cobalamin, otherwise known as vitamin B12.
